Attorney General Doug Peterson is issuing a consumer alert regarding an individual or a group of individuals posing as former Nebraska State Senator, Mike Flood, and attempting to solicit “charitable donations” from members of the public.

Nebraska Attorney General Doug Peterson announced a settlement today with a company that allegedly placed unauthorized charges on consumers’ telephone bills using a practice called “cramming.”

Lincoln - Attorney General Doug Peterson announces today that the State of Nebraska will receive $ 663,835.35 as part of a multistate settlement with automakers Hyundai and Kia to resolve claims that the companies misrepresented the mileage and fuel economy ratings for some of their model year 2011, 2012 and 2013 vehicles.

The $41.2 million settlement between the 33 states and the District of Columbia and the Hyundai Motor Company, Hyundai Motor America, Kia Motors Corporation, Inc., and Kia Motors America, Inc. concludes a multi-state investigation into the companies' business practices relating to fuel economy estimate adjustments that occurred at a time when gasoline prices in the United States were especially high.

Nebraska Attorney General Doug Peterson announced a settlement today with retailer USA Discounters, also doing business as USA Living and Fletcher’s Jewelers, along with 49 other state attorneys general, to resolve the states’ claims of deceptive trade practices.  USA Discounters sold consumer products, including furniture, appliances, televisions, computers, smart phones, jewelry, and other consumer goods and financed many of the sales on credit.  Sales were often targeted towards military families.

Nebraska Attorney General Doug Peterson and 35 other attorneys general filed an antitrust lawsuit yesterday against the makers of Suboxone, a prescription drug used to treat opioid addiction, over allegations that the companies engaged in a scheme to block generic competitors and cause purchasers to pay artificially high prices.

Nebraska Attorney General Doug Peterson today announced a settlement with Waste Connections of Nebraska, Inc., resolving an investigation that focused on recycling services in Syracuse, Nebraska.  The State had concerns that at times during 2012 and 2013, Waste Connections failed to properly handle consumers’ curbside recycling materials.  The State alleged that Waste Connections treated some recycling materials and garbage from Syracuse in the same manner, transporting at least some materials to a landfill, instead of recycling those materials.   Waste Connections denies that any recycling was mishandled in Syracuse during 2012 or 2013, or any time thereafter.  Waste Connections has handled garbage hauling and disposal in Syracuse since 2002. 

Lincoln - Nebraska Attorney General Doug Peterson today announced that his office would begin outreach to connect with Nebraskans who may qualify for complete discharge of their federal student loans. Students who attended a program at Corinthian Colleges, including Everest, WyoTech, and Heald College online or on-campus programs, may be eligible for complete forgiveness of their federal student loans under a program run by the US Department of Education. Approximately 380 Nebraskans may still be eligible for loan forgiveness.  The amount forgiven regarding those students is to be determined.  Students need only fill out a simple attestation form in order to apply.
